The marathon took place in Dewey Beach, DE and it was about 3 hours from Washington, DC. Dewey is essentially a biker beach on the Delaware Coast. Rehoboth Beach is nicer, but not very close to the start or finish. I would recommend staying in Dewey Beach and the Sea Esta III hotel is on the main strip and right next to the finish line.

The Race

Coastal Delaware MarathonA lot of things made this race special (birthday marathon!) and my goal was to run it in under 4 hours. The starting line for this race is about 1/2 a mile south of town. There were shuttles to take runners, but we opted to walk and ate bagels on the way.

The course initially heads north, towards Rehoboth Beach, along the main drag in Dewey.  You run the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, which is cool. Unfortunately, this the only real chance you get to see the ocean during the race. The course then changes to packed gravel and wood boards as it winds through Cape He
nlopen State Park.  The park is nice and has lots of old WW II observation towers and bunkers.

After you pass the Lewes Ferry, you make a left turn and start heading home. Then you see an awful highway sign letting you know that you are 10 miles from Dewey Beach. At this point, I started wondering what the **** I’m doing out here. I was hurting from mile 16 on in. My tailbone injury flared up, the sun came out and blisters started forming on my feet.

I finished the race and and had the best post race brew of my life. CoDel bibs come with three(!!!) beer tickets. I sat down on the beach and finished 3 beers as fast as possible. Then I took off my shoes and proceeded to get sunburned.

This was the race that triggered my insatiable hunger for destination races. Join me on my marathon journey on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
